Since getting my Netbook, I've started searching for forums and sites like this one.  I have found a surprising amount of hatred for Netbooks (and contempt for Netbook Users) by hard core computer users.  Has anyone else noticed this?

I’ve noticed that too. I'm not a gadget geek, but I've a fascination with netbooks from the day the original 7"Asus Eee PC 701 started making headlines. I happened to fly to New York on the day the 8.9" Asus Eee PC 901 was supposed to hit the stores and I went to J&R as quickly as possible. Unfortunately deliveries where severally delayed. I live in Europe and it took another 3 months before the Eee PC 901 XP-version hit the stores here. That was a long wait, but we've been using our Eee every day since.

I think it's just the fact that netbooks are a new phenomenon and not everyone is an early adopter. Some people do not understand that netbooks are usually bought as secondary or tertiary PCs. And perhaps the fact that netbooks are quite often bought for spouses and children might play a role here as well as the fact that they are expected to become popular in poorer regions of the world like parts of Asia and South America. Perhaps they're seen as the poor man's laptop.

I travel by public transport regularly (which is quite normal here). I think it's much easier, but also a lot saver, to travel with a cheap, light and firm netbook than with a heavy, expensive and fragile laptop.

Some trend watchers think netbooks might become the most popular PC in the near future and I think there is good reason for it.

Cool Netbooks are cool Cool

I think people tend to look down on netbooks because most of the things it does can be done with many PDAs. And people think it is somewhat dumb to own one when you can have a PDA/phone instead. So, people look at them as a waste of time and money. I myself think they are pretty cool. I dont think they have been accepted in the mainstream yet is all. And eventually people will do so, but it is just something that takes time. I think they lack a good solid marketing campaign like other gadgets have.

I guess we'll have to wait until Apple launches a MacNetbook or something. Once that happens the 'tech elites' will stand in long lines, created by Apple marketers in front of New York's Apple stores. That will boost ordinary netbook sales as well.

Perhaps we will be seen as trendsetters, techno geeks and early adopters Grin

Im a pretty hardcore PC user and i dont know much about net books so i came here to learn something and i honestly dont see why somebody could "hate" somebody for using a specific type of computer

It all depends on the users needs if you want your pc to be a power house so be it but if you just want to do lightweight tasks life surfing the web and e-mail a smaller computer would suit you just fine!

netbooks are looked at as the short term solution mostly for traveling needs, I think desktops server more of the long term purpose.

The good thing now is there are more options for netbooks and are becoming more widely used than desktop in terms of personal choice. Just hook it up to a large monitor at home and its a desktop.

Sorry for bringing up a topic, but I'm a new user and wanted to comment on this.

Netbooks have a very specific application and generally people like a device that can do it all.  They don't realize that everyone doesn't need it all when it comes to a computer.

For example, I'm the IT Manager for a mid sized corporation that has branches spread out through several states.  I travel to them frequently.  I have a laptop (17" MacBook Pro) that I mainly use.  Despite the fact that it has Windows running on Bootcamp, I didn't want to switch over every time I needed to do VPN or fix a problem in our Windows based accounting system.  So I got the netbook since all I needed was internet and network connections to do that aspect of my work.  I also needed to fit both in one bag so I could travel with both.  With the size of the netbook, it was the perfect option.
